Abstract: For investigating carrier rate of dermatophytes on hair of dog and cat in Beijing, samples from seven points of the pets were used to cultivate fungus on Sabouraud medium / Dermatophyte Test Medium(DTM) at 26 ℃ for two weeks. A total of 770 hair samples from 78 dogs and 32 cats were cultivated to isolate fungus from January 2002 to March 2003 in the veterinary teaching hospital of CAU. Identification was made by colony morphology and microscopic structures. The results indicated that the carrier rate was low (2.78%,1/36) in dog, but was high (9.4%,3/32)in cat in Beijing. The distributing pattern of saprophytes on hairs was as follows, highest carrier rate was found inside the ear, next the right carpus, the lateral corner of right eye, the external of ear base, the back, the tail and the abdomen. The main saprophytes on hair of dogs were: 30.69% Penicillium, 12.64%Alternaria, 6.14% Aspergillus, 5.42% Mucor, 4.69% Cladosporum, 20.94% Candida. 9.39% fungi could not be identified. 67 strains of bacteria were also isolated. Other pathogenic dermatomyces were cultured from pets, they were Malassezia (Pityrosporium) furfur, Piedraia hortae, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Coccidioides immitis, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and Scopularis brevicaulis. This suggests that pet might have been infected by them cutaneously or systemically.
