Abstract: The objective of this study was to study the expression and localization of βcatenin in alpaca skin of different colors, and to explore the function of βcatenin in the process of coat color formation. The mRNA and protein expression level of βcatenin in alpaca skin of different colors were examined by Realtime quantitative PCR, Western blot and immunohistochemistry. The gene expressive quantity of βcatenin in the brown alpaca′s skin tissue was 1.662 times than ones of white alpaca. The distribution of βcatenin in alpaca skin were demonstrated, the expression was notable difference between the white and brown alpaca′s based on the average optical density. Our findings showed that βcatenin was involved in the process of coat color formation.
