Abstract: The objective of this study was to study the expression and localization of βcatenin in alpaca skin of different colors, and to explore the function of βcatenin in the process of coat color formation. The mRNA and protein expression level of βcatenin in alpaca skin of different colors were examined by Realtime quantitative PCR, Western blot and immunohistochemistry. The gene expressive quantity of βcatenin in the brown alpaca′s skin tissue was 1.662 times than ones of white alpaca. The distribution of βcatenin in alpaca skin were demonstrated, the expression was notable difference between the white and brown alpaca′s based on the average optical density. Our findings showed that βcatenin was involved in the process of coat color formation.
