Abstract: Subgroup J avian leukosis virus (ALVJ) was isolated from both provetriculus suspensions and blood samples of 9 in 10 laying hens only with proventriculitis, and coinfection of ALVJ with reticuloendotheliosis virus was also confirmed in 4 chickens. The gp85 genes of ALVJ isolates were amplified by PCR, sequenced and compared to 20 reference ALVJ strains. Sequence comparisons indicated that the provetriculus isolate had 978% identity with the HPPS103 strain isolated from white meattype chickens and 93.0% identity with SD07LK1 strain from eggtype chickens. The result demonstrated that ALVJ infection was common in some chickens with only proventriculus, further indicating the diversity of virus infections associated with proventriculitis. ALVJ may be take part in pathogenesis of provetriculitis in some chickens, but its pathogenic role needs to be further studied.
